Beginner Theory Course

This new 8-week beginner theory course is a perfect companion to having better music fundamentals. Based on Mark Sarnecki’s Basic Rudiments course, younger music students will benefit from weekly homework that helps them accomplish the following:

  • Notation in Treble and Bass clefs, note values and rests
  • Note steps
  • Major and Minor scale
  • Simple time signature
  • Major and Minor chords
  • Basic intervals and scale degrees
  • Music appreciation through listening examples

This course will benefit students with a playing level equivalent to RCM Level 2 (or Faber Level 3A). Successful completion of this course will give students an equivalency of RCM Celebrate Theory 2 (with some materials from Celebrate Theory 3).

Private Theory Lessons

Private Theory Lessons are offered for all theory requirements, from beginner to University graduate level. Our instructors are also qualified to teach all RCM Theory levels. As the schedule and curriculum for individual theory lessons tend to vary from student to student, please contact us directly for an assessment so we can properly tailor a unique theory progression for your specific needs.

Secondary School Accreditation

In accordance with Ontario Schools: Policy and Program Requirements 2016 (Kindergarten to Grade 12), students may obtain secondary school credit for completing the corresponding RCM practical exam and RCM theory exam, as delineated in the table below. As each school board may have different requirements, please consult with your secondary school academic counsellor to confirm accreditation eligibility. To redeem a secondary school credit, you may need to provide an RCM transcript that indicates you have completed the corresponding courses. If you require a copy of a transcript, please contact RCM directly.
