Theory Lessons

Fall 2026 Theory Course Registration Now Open

Our theory courses are designed to teach the fundamental tenets of music theory and prepare students for RCM theory examinations. Classes are held weekly, with a complete coverage of rudimentary music theory concepts. Students will learn about key signatures, intervals, melody writing, transposition, and many more concepts. The course fees include all materials: theory textbook(s), practice exams, other supplementary materials, worksheets, and audio recordings.

Lesson Options

For courses offering both In-Person and Online options, the course will be taught in-person with the option to join the class through Zoom. Students taking the course in-person may also opt to take the course online during certain weeks if they prefer as all classes will be recorded. Students from other timezones are also welcome.

Private Theory Lessons

Private Theory Lessons are offered for all theory requirements, from beginner to University graduate level. Our instructors are also qualified to teach all RCM Theory levels. As the schedule and curriculum for individual theory lessons tend to vary from student to student, please contact us directly for an assessment so we can properly tailor a unique theory progression for your specific needs.

Secondary School Accreditation

In accordance with Ontario Schools: Policy and Program Requirements 2016 (Kindergarten to Grade 12), students may obtain secondary school credit for completing the corresponding RCM practical exam and RCM theory exam, as delineated in the table below. As each school board may have different requirements, please consult with your secondary school academic counsellor to confirm accreditation eligibility. To redeem a secondary school credit, you may need to provide an RCM transcript that indicates you have completed the corresponding courses. If you require a copy of a transcript, please contact RCM directly.
