There is no set age when a child should begin music lessons. Some of the factors to consider are the individual child's developmental readiness, the family's interest and ability to support the child's learning, and also the type of program that you are considering.
Programs for very young children (less than 4) usually involve active parent participation, combining movement, singing and props. Around ages 3 and 4, children are usually ready to begin learning in a group lesson (usually piano or violin) with other children their own age. Group instrumental lessons combine creative musical activities along with instrumental instruction.
At Heritage Music Academy, we offer a number of group violin and piano programs geared towards children aged 4 and up. Children can participate in group-only programs or combine group classes along with individual lessons.
Why should you consider early music lessons for your child?
Young children have an extraordinary ability to learn given the right teacher and optimal learning environment. A number of recent studies have looked at the benefits of starting music education early on. A recent study found that children who started music lessons before age 7 had significant differences in their brain development versus children who started lessons later on. These differences accounted for enhanced motor and visual abilities.
My 4 year had tried taking individual lessons for a few months and things didn't work out. Should I wait till my child is older?
Individual music lessons can be challenging with younger children. Younger children are often only able to concentrate for limited periods of time and require a teacher who is well-experience in creating an interesting and developmentally-appropriate curriculum. Group-only or a combination of group and shorter individual lessons work well for younger children. Heritage Music Academy offers a number of options that are suitable for younger children. Please contact our school to ask about programs that would be best suited for your child.
